Gordes is a small village in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It lies at just over 600m in the Luberon Regional Nature Park and is one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The place is particularly known for the beautiful scenery of the lavender blossom at the foot of the mountain, but also the medieval streets with their houses towering on both sides.
Today Gordes lives mainly from tourism, the famous nativity figures and the wine produced in the surrounding area.
In the Château de Gordes, a mighty castle from the 11th century, which was redesigned in the Rennaisance, there is now the tourist information and an art museum.
The church of the city of Saint-Firmin was built on the foundation of a much older church. The foundations date from the 12th century, the tower from the 14th century. A dungeon has survived at its base to this day. However, the building is in need of improvement. In general, the city looks like it could use a renovation (as of 2019). Many of the houses, as well as the church, are held on the slope with steel cables or are reinforced with supports and struts. The entire city also looks very empty. As if it were firmly in the hands of the tourists.
Not far from Gordes are the Village des Bories open-air museum, the ruins of the Saint-Chaffret abbey and the Notre-Dame de Sénanque abbey.
How to get there?
The easiest way to get to Gordes is by car. There are enough parking spaces around the city. There is also space for campers at the foot of the mountain.
Conclusion:
The medieval streets definitely have their charm, but the extremely touristic layout loses much of its potential. In the lavender bloom, the area around Gordes is definitely worth seeing.
The place is beautifully embedded in the landscape, but the old town has seen better days. Many of the buildings are in poor condition and you are pushed through the narrow streets in the off-season.
Gordes is probably more of a beautiful photo motif than a beautiful old town.
