The volcanic crater Hverfjall is 396 metres high and is located near the small village of Reykjahlíð on the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn. It is part of the Kravla volcano system. Nearby are the mud springs Hverarönd, also part of the volcanic system, the small cave Grjótagjá and the Víti crater at Krafla volcano.

The trail of history

The volcano erupted about 2500 years ago. The crater has a diameter of about 1 km. During the eruption, the southern part of the crater moved and caused a landslide, which changed the round conical shape of the volcanic mountain. When Iceland was settled, there was a volcanic eruption in the area around Hverfjall that covered almost the entire area with lava. Remains of this lava lake can be seen today at Dimmuborgir at the foot of the volcano.

Useful Information

Hiking to the top of the mountain is a very popular activity with visitors. There is one trail that climbs from the south and one from the northwest. It is strictly forbidden to leave the paths, otherwise the fragile volcanic stone could be damaged and visitors could fall down the slope.
The hike up takes about 20 minutes and once at the top you are rewarded with a beautiful view over Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir and the surrounding lava fields. What makes this volcano so popular with visitors is its accessibility, as the Hverfjall volcanic crater is right next to the ring road that runs through the Lake Myvatn area here. There is a visitor car park at the foot of the volcano. So if you are interested in volcanoes and are travelling to the north of Iceland, you should definitely stop off at Hverfjall, put on good hiking boots and have a wonderful time hiking on the volcano.
