The sky changed color and suddenly it was dark. Thousands of stars shone in the sky as the sun went to bed.

But we also got to know another facet.
We drove to Ramsau in our travel mobile to take a leisurely ride up in the panoramic gondolas of the Südwandbahn. It climbs almost 1000 metres in altitude in just a few minutes and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area – without breaking a sweat.
Once at the top, a breathtaking alpine world opens up to visitors.
The mountain station is the perfect starting point for exploring nature, but we were on the mountain for another highlight.
We purposefully explored the Dachstein Skywalk. How small the world in the valley looked.
The wind blew through our hair as we stood on the stairs leading into nothingness. You feel very small in the face of the steep slope that you look down. The ice palace right next to it with its carved sculptures led us into a glittering world like something out of a fairy tale and brought us closer to the adventures of the first Austrian glacier and ice age researcher, Friedrich Simony.
But the real reason for our visit was the opportunity to experience the sunset on the mountain.
On selected days it is possible to take part in a sunset fondue. We waited patiently for the sky to turn red. A group of musicians played folk music, birds flew over our heads and the world seemed to be in order for a moment. In our opinion, the play of colors could have lasted for hours, we were so captivated by this moment, but after just a few minutes it was already dark.
We found ourselves inside the restaurant in the mountain station of the Südwandbahn and let the evening come to an end with good food and musical accompaniment.
Useful information
The road to the Südwandbahn is a toll road. The costs can be found on the website. If you take the cable car up the mountain, you can have your toll ticket validated at the cable car stations and use the access road free of charge.
For those who don’t want to go cross-country skiing, alpine skiing or climbing, but just want to see the suspension bridge, the stairs to nowhere, the ice palace and the ladder to heaven, a trip up at 4:30 p.m. is sufficient.
The return times are given as 9:00 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. In our experience, you can safely take your time with dinner and aim for the descent at 9:30 p.m., as the first one is so busy that there is a high probability that you won’t get a seat.
On the official homepage you can book not only dinner at sunset, but also breakfast at sunrise.
